  1. For over 2000 years the world has struggled about how to deal with issues in the mid east. Pompeii fought a years long war in what is now Turkey and Armenia and almost lost to Mithridates. In part because he forgot that the need of the empire was stability. Today, that need is the same, stability in the region is more important than which gang of thugs are running the country. Should the US decide that Syria is a real threat than the only way to accomplish that task is with massive invasion and a takeover of the country. In short either do nothing or do everything.

  2. I remember two years ago when the protests started in Egypt, Syria, Libya and other places. I was very idealistic and excited believing the oppressors would be brought to justice and the people would be allowed more liberties. But always in the back of my mind I thought it could turn out like the Iran revolution in the 70’s, I never imagined it would get as bad as it has.
I like Zakaria’s idea of humanitarian involvement. It’s the only option at this point. I think the US has already been called out and missed its opportunity for open military action due to a lack of popular support, nobody wants another Iraq war at this point. Assad called the Obama administrations bluff by using chemical weapons on the populace.
